Questions about STI testing
How soon after suspected exposure can the tests be performed?
An incubation period is the timeframe from the moment of exposure to the infection to when it can be detected in a test. This varies by infection:
-
HIV - For accuracy the best time to take the test is 6 weeks after exposure, however as the test measure levels of HIV p24 antigen which are high in the first few weeks after infection, early detection is possible.
-
Hepatitis B - The Hepatitis B Surface Antigen test should be performed after an incubation period of 6 weeks to several months following suspected exposure.
-
Hepatitis C - The Hepatitis C Antibodies test should be performed 6-8 weeks after suspected infection.
-
Most other sexually transmitted infections have an incubation period of at least 14 days.
How and when will I get the results?
The results should be available within three days, but most often they are available the next day. Your results will be emailed to you in a secure link.
