What is an ECG continuous monitor?

An ECG continuous monitor is a portable device that records your heart's electrical activity. You might also hear this referred to as a Holter monitor, 24-hour ECG, heart rate monitor, or even ambulatory ECG – all terms used to describe this effective diagnostic tool. The device is worn by the patient 24 hrs a day to provide continuous data about how your heart functions. It can be worn for 1 to 7 days.

The information collected helps us to detect a range of potential issues, including heart arrhythmias, abnormal heart rates, and other conditions that may not be immediately obvious during a routine doctor’s visit.

Why would I need an ECG continuous monitor?

The continuous monitoring allows us to detect heart irregularities that may only occur at certain times or under specific conditions which could be missed during a consultation or with an ECG performed at a single point in time.

The doctor may recommend an ECG continuous monitor:

- if you've been experiencing intermittent heart palpitations

- to help decide whether other symptoms such as dizziness or light-headedness, shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, chest pain or discomfortre are related to a heart condition

- if you have a history of heart disease or cardiovascular risk factors.

What conditions can an ECG continuous monitor detect?

Our ECG continuous monitor can help detect a variety of conditions, including:

  • Arrhythmias: Irregular heart rhythms, which may lead to symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, or fainting.

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF): An irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase the risk of stroke.

  • Bradycardia: A slow heart rate that may cause fatigue, dizziness, or fainting.

  • Tachycardia: A fast heart rate that can lead to dizziness or chest pain.

  • Ischemic heart disease: When the blood supply to the heart is reduced, possibly causing chest pain.

  • Heart blocks: Impaired electrical signals in the heart that can affect the normal rhythm.

What is the process?

1. Fitting Appoitnment

The process begins with a 15-minute fitting appointment where the doctors will programme the ECG monitor and fit it to your chest.

2. Monitoring Period

The monitor will then record your heart’s activity for the chosen time period (24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 5 days, or 7 days). You can go about your normal routine while wearing the monitor.

3. Return & Data Download

After your monitoring period is complete, you will return the device to us. We will download the data and have it reviewed by one of our doctors.

4. Review & Report

Once the data has been thoroughly analysed, we will provide a detailed report within 2-3 days outlining any findings or concerns. If necessary, we will discuss next steps with you.

What else should I know?

Comfort and Ease

The monitor is lightweight and discreet, so you can continue with your daily activities while wearing it.

Preparation

There’s no special preparation required before your fitting appointment. However, if you have a hairy chest, you may need to shave the area where the electrodes will be attached to ensure a secure fit. We also recommend avoiding lotions or oils on your skin to help the electrodes stick more securely.

Showering

You should remove the monitor before showering and reattach it once you’re completely dry. This ensures the device stays functional throughout the monitoring period.

Aftercare

After your monitoring period, simply return the device as instructed. We will take care of the rest, including downloading the data and generating your report.
